F/A-18 Absturz in San Diego
9. Dezember 2008In San Diego in der Huggins Street im University City Quartier ist ein F/A-18 Kampfjet abgestürzt. Anscheinend sind die Triebwerke ausgefallen wie SignOnSanDiego.com berichtet:
„Two witnesses who spoke to the pilot said the aircraft lost one engine over the ocean, and the other failed over the neighborhood. The jet crashed less than a quarter-mile from University City High School and two miles west of the Miramar runway.“
I hope all my San Diego friends are save and alive! Please, let me know.
Allison and I are just fine. Just before the jet crashed, I watched it flying very fast and very low over the houses at the top of my hill. I knew that wasn’t normal. About 10 minutes later, as I drove to UTC, I saw the huge tower of black smoke and knew the plan had gone down. The pilot was so close to getting his plane to the canyon — so sad it crashed into houses. If you look for the intersection of Huggins and Cather on Google Maps you will see this. Nancy T’s condo complex can be seen just on the other side of the canyon from where the jet went down. Here is an article from the local paper:
Fellow church members are grieving for the family killed Monday when an F/A-18 Hornet jet exploded in a fireball.
Young Lee’s pastor, Daniel Shin, said the 36-year-old mother was killed in the crash, as were one of her children and her mother. Young’s other child is still missing.
Young was a member of the Korean United Methodist Church in Clairemont.
„The police chaplain called me a 6 o’clock and told me what happened,“ Shin said.
Shin said Lee’s husband and the father of her two children is also a member of the church.
„They’re good people, they’re gentle people, they’re so loving toward other people,“ Shin said.
Fellow church member Yong Byun said Lee and her family had just moved into the University City home a few months ago because they needed more space for a new baby.
„So sad, what can I say?“ Byun said.
Byun said Lee’s mother was also killed in the crash. She had flown from Korea to stay with the family shortly after the baby was born two months ago.
„She likes to see the grandchild, that’s why she came here,“ Byun said.
Church members said Lee’s other son was about a year old, and that Lee worked as a registered nurse at a local hospital and her husband ran a business in the South Bay. Shin said the congregation will do everything to help Lee’s surviving family members –including her husband — get through this horrible loss.
„We’ll cry with them, experience the loss with them, be with them every step of the way,“ Shin said.

Dear Nancy
I’m glad that you are save and thank you very much for the additonal information. The story is very sad.
Hi Stefan!
Thanks for your concern. It is greatly appreciated. Angelo and I are fine, thankfully. We live about 10 miles away from the plane crash. It has been all over the news. You’re right, it is extremely sad. I didn’t see anything or hear anything, but the damage looks devastating. I hope all is well in Switzerland 🙂
Dear Missy
Thanks for your post. I’m glad that you and Angelo are fine. It has been all over the news in Europe too.
Unfortunately I’m sick, but beside of that everything is ok. Wish you a nice day.
Dear Stefan, Thank you for inquiring — I am safe, as is my mother, who lives in University City. I heard about the crash through a text message from my daughter while I was consulting with a student at San Diego State University. The student’s husband is a pilot in the same program and she was very shaken up. When such tragedies happen, people call and text each other to let each other know they’re okay, and she had already heard that her husband was safe. I hope you and yours are well and thriving.
Dear Mary. Thank you too for your comment. I’m glad that all my San Diego friends are fine, but it’s a very sad story with this family. Just let me know if you have further information about this accident.
Hi Stefan,
Thanks for your concern. After seeing these planes fly everyday over Torrey Pines I often wonder if one would ever go down. It’s very sad for the father of that family. The pilot was so close to getting it in the canyon. One more street and it looks as maybe he might have got the jet over all residences. But I heard in the news the second engine blew and it was going down quick. At least he missed the school that was nearby. I heard the choppers flying over as soon as I heard it went down. Of all the places I was during the crash, I was at the dump getting mulch for my backyard. It sits right next to Miramar NAS where the plane was trying to land.

Hi Michael
Thank you very much for your statement about the crash in San Diego. I miss playing golf, so I should come back to play on Torrey Pines ;-).
